Charles John (my ggf) b. abt. 1853 New York, NY (17th May according to family Bible written up in AUS.) d. 10/08/1929 Sydney AUS. Arrived in OZ C1875, m. 19/02/1884 Sydney Louisa DUDLEY (a dau. and g-dau.of transported British convicts). Various records list him as an “agent”, a” journalist”, an “accountant”; at one stage he had patented a product that was most probably really snake oil, he always appeared to have some “money making” venture going although he did not become overly wealthy and he seems to have avoided bankruptcy. My mother and her sister remembered his distinct American accent. We don’t know why he came to Aus., although throughout the second half of the 19th Century shipping lists show substantial trade with some vessels making numerous voyages. The 1870’s were really after the main gold rushes, here and in New Zealand, so it is likely that something else impelled him to travel to OZZ. The 1861 US Census lists a family in New York Ward 7 District 1, New York, New York which includes a Chas aged 4, the full listing is: Richd Browning 26, Hanns Browning 22, Jno Browning 6, Chas Browning 4, Willm Browning 3, Geo Browning 1, Jno Browning 38, Emma Browning 7, Eliza Egerton 19, Joseph Mernick 23 Perhaps someone out there is related to, or knows of this group and may assist

Hosea & Elizabeth BROWNING migrated to Panola Co, TX, and that next census seems to show James Reuben, wife and one child in the household of George BROWNING of Humphreys Co, TN, who may be uncle to James Reuben. Can anyone confirm, deny or otherwise shed light on the parentage of James Reuben BROWNING? Can anyone give information on Hosea and George BROWNING? Thanks!
