WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT? BLOCKHOUSE SUPPORTERS SAY
Improvement and Preservation of Historic Old Building Major Problem in Minds of Many Local Persons;
Four or Five Hundred Dollars Would Care for Needs, Said

     "What can be done at about the Blockhouse?" asks many Klickitat valley persons following some comment in recent weeks anent the building's slow decay and gradual disintegration as it silently weathers the days and months at the rear of the county cottage in Goldendale. Some varied plans have been advanced. The plan which would call for contributions from civic groups seems to have gained some headway and it is understood that a few of the more financially responsible civic and fraternal groups in the city are interested in seeing that the Blockhouse preserved and improved. Whether the total amount needed, estimated at between $400 and $500 could be raised in this manner is questionable. However, this week The Sentinel learns that the committee working with the pioneers will contact several of the groups within the next two or three weeks and make a determined effort to address them in the project. In order to speed things along, The Sentinel will act as official receiver for any private donations that might be forthcoming. A donors' list on which will appear the names and the amount donated will be at the office and any person interested in helping the cause along make call and sign the "register" leaving the money in a box which is to be provided for that purpose. In other cities were similar projects were financed in a similar manner, the public response is said to have been gratifying. The hope it was also expressed that the city, in lieu of having cash for outright donation, might aid after the necessary monies were contributed, by furnishing two or three of the city crew for a time, together with a truck or other needed equipment. Some donation labor might be solicited later. It is hoped that the reaction will be favorable and that some definite plan may be worked out within a few days.
