WILLIAM ELLIS AND FAMILY
William Ellis was born at Somersetshire, England, March
29, 1829. He came to America with his parents in 1831, settling first at
New York. Later they moved to McHenry County, Illinois.
He was married to Amanda Heath at Marengo, Illinois in
1851. He became a member of the Masonic Order when he was a young man and
continued to be a Mason throughout his life.
Mr. and Mrs. Ellis came to Hood River in 1890 and settled
in the Belmont neighborhood, where he soon became engaged in the strawberry
industry. Mrs. Ellis died several years ago.
Mr. Ellis was usually present at the Pioneer's Reunion.
At the last reunion at which he was present (1915) he was the second oldest
member present, being 86 years old. Mr. William Boorman being older. He was
called "Grandpa Ellis" by nearly everyone.
He died March 5, 1916, leaving eight children, twenty
four grand-children, twenty three great grand children, and one great great
grandchild. His funeral services were held at the Masonic Hall on Tuesday,
March 7th.
