BLOCKHOUSE IS COUNCIL TOPIC
Delegation of Klickitat Valley Pioneers Appear Before City Officials
W.E. Hornibrook, Jeff Taylor and D.F. Tebbs, all members of the Klickitat Valley Pioneer Association, comprising a committee on the improvement and retention of the original Blockhouse now located on county property at the rear of the cottage, met with the city council Monday evening and asked that some cognizance be taken of the old relic and that ways and means be found it to improve the building. Mr. Hornibrook was spokesman for the group, presenting the pioneer viewpoint in a clever and well prepared talk. He drew applause from the councilmen following its presentation. It was learned that a WPA project had been submitted to the proper authorities and that if approved, and it was thought that the project would be approved, funds that would be available for the Blockhouse. The council promised the delegation that improvement would come when the federal funds were available. Lynn Spalding, engineer on the Columbus bridge and the man who gathered the project's data, stated that he believed action would be forthcoming by November 1. The pioneer delegation was pleased with the action and promise of the council and expressed its appreciation through the spokesman. Engineers Ross and Ashton, soil conservation officials, appeared before the council and asked that the water at the camp be left turned on due to the fire hazard. The mayor assured the men that the council would see that proper protection was accorded the "little city" at the fair-grounds. Councilmen also heard the reports on the progress of the bridge and transferred funds from the current expense fund to a special bridge fund to care for the pay rolls and incidental charges. The city budget was checked carefully by the councilmen. The officials included an item for the Goldendale band after it had been stricken to ensure the budget's legality. When the total was declared, it was found possible to include the item and the council voted unanimously to do so.
