BLOCKHOUSE WILL SINK INTO OBLIVION; PRESERVATION NEED
Pioneer Writes Brief Note to Explain Condition of Landmark Now Located in
Goldendale;
Suggests Collection for Aiding in Program to Recreate and Save Structure
The first broadside of the current season which asks
for preservation of the Blockhouse, old landmark of this area, was fired
this week by H.O. Allyn, well known Goldendale pioneer and a resident here
for 57 years. Mr. Allyn has been extremely interested in the preservation
of the landmark for several years and has cooperated with others to attempt
a program of saving the wooden structure. In a letter to The Sentinel which
would, ordinarily, appear in the form column, the management takes the privilege
of printing it as a news story in an effort to arouse interest in other quarters
and the program of conserving the log block house. Mr. Allyn's letter
follows:
"To the people of Klickitat county, the pioneers, and
especially the grangers, and all who are interested in the preservation of
the old Blockhouse (now located on the county courthouse park at the rear
of the county cottage) "If this house is to be preserved, it must be done
without delay. Resting on the ground as it does, the sow bugs, worms, beetles
and other insects are working for its destruction. "Funds should be in some
manner raised immediately, not only to place it on a concrete foundation,
but to treat it with a creosote or some other penetrating spray to kill the
insects now in its possession. "And finally, a cover should be erected to
protect it from the weather and a boy-right fence built around it. You have
my word for it that if nothing is done about preserving this old landmark
at once, you will soon be without the Blockhouse unless a replica is re-erected.
