INDIAN PETROGLYPHS HAVE BEEN RELOCATED
The seven year dream and ambitions of the East Klickitat
Gem and Mineral club came into realization this spring when the Indian
petroglyphs which would eventually be covered by water in the poll above
John Day dam were moved to the park near Roosevelt.
The famed Chinook rock which weighs approximately 30
tons and the Coyote rock which is estimated at 25 tons were brought to the
park site on lowboys furnished by the Peter Hewitt Construction company.
The rocks were set on concrete bases by the Rock club
members the weekend of May 30 and on June 17 were moved to the entrance of
the park by a Bert Stanberg and a crew from the construction company.
Both rocks were placed, facing north in the same position
that they stood for centuries.
In April 1963 trees were set out on three sides of the
two acre park for wind breaks and game refuge. The trees were furnished by
the State Game Department and the members of the club were assisted by Richard
Thompson, and a crew from the game department, Goldendale, in setting out
the trees.
The East Klickitat Gem and Mineral club members who have
taken the responsibility of preserving the Indian petroglyphs are grateful
and wish to express their thanks to the Peter Hewitt company for their help
and assistance in moving the petroglyphs to the park site.
