POWER FOR PORTLAND
May Build Railroad Up Valley Under Certain Conditions
H. Fleischacker, the San Francisco millionaire who is
back of the Northwestern Electric Co., Mr. Shepeler, of Stone & Webster,
electric plant contractors of Boston, and manager Condit, of the Northwestern,
arrived in White Salmon Sunday noon and were whisked out by auto to the dam
sites up the river. They inspected the exploratory work done at the three
sites, and while they have not made final selection, Mr. Condit said they
had about decided to pass up The Narrows for a site as satisfactory bedrock
on the east side could not be located. Mr. Fleischacker, who visited the
valley for the first time, was highly pleased with the power prospects and
expressed delight with the valley in general.
Asked as to what use the power would be put, Mr. Condit
said that it was for sale to anyone who wanted to get service. It will be
used for private and municipal purposes, and a railway up the valley will
absorb considerable of it. It is expected, too, to convey the power to points
along the Columbia and to Camas, where Mr. Fleischacker is interested in
the big paper mills.
