POWER COMPANIES BUILD ON KLICKITAT
The Northwestern Electric Company and interests allies
with the Lyle Townsite Company, supposed to be the Pacific Light and Power
Co., have two crews of men at work on the Big Klickitat above Lyle for the
purpose of holding down certain power rights which they claim there. Some
time ago the Northwestern Company had engineers in the field and they recommended
that they buy the land on one side of the river belonging to an Indian woman
by the name of Emma Dave, whose land is on the Big Klickitat. Later the Lyle
Townsite interests started condemnation proceedings against the Indian woman
for the land on the opposite side of the river from the Northwestern Electric
Company. They also asked to have the deed canceled given the Northwestern
Company by the Indian woman claiming that she did not understand what she
had sold the right for. The Northwestern Company had made a deal for the
Hill and Spokane interests on the Big Klickitat and after the Lyle people
started condemnation proceedings against the Indian woman, proceedings were
at once filed by the Northwestern Company for the Hill and Spokane Capitalists
Holdings.
This fight may mean quite a legal battle to determine who shall
get the power rights. The proposed power right is just above Lyle on the
rapids, and one company will have to give way to the other. The Northwestern
Company had proposed the construction of a 5000 H.P. plant for the first
unit.
There is considerable activity on the White Salmon river
also over power but will not be as interesting as that started on the Big
Klickitat.
