PIONEER BICKLETON FAMILY HAS REUNION

A brief sketch of the Piendl family history and account of their eigth annual family reunion was submitted by Mrs. Chloe E. Walling, Bickleton.
A hundred years ago there lived a widowed mother, Anna Marie Piendl in Village Creek, Iowa, with a family of three sons, Frank, Jacob and John, and here all grew to manhood.
Frank, the eldest, worked as a brakeman on a railroad and was killed when steps in the ladder which led to the top of the car where brakes were applied, broke, throwing him beneath the moving train.
Both Jacob and John learned the carpenters trade in Iowa. As Jacob grew older, he had a strong desire to go west. In 1875 he left Iowa, traveling on an emigrant train the greater part of the way to the west coast, where he did construction work in British Columbia and carpenter work in the Portland, Ore. area.
Four years later his brother John, who traveled by train to San Francisco, from there by boat up the coast to Portland, joined his brother Jacob to work at their trade.
Jacob Piendl was married to Emily McCarty in the year of 1879, at Salem, Ore. Several years after their marriage the family left Oregon for a visit at Village Creek, Iowa.
This time on returning to the west they moved to Washington Territory and later to the Bickleton area, where he followed farming until his retirement when he and his family went to Mabton to reside, and it was there he passed away February 3, 1925.
John Piendl, after his marriage to Mary Murphy in 1888 remained in Portland to continue his business as contractor and builder. He passed away at Vancouver, January 29, 1919.
The eighth family reunion was held at Bickleton in the Grange hall Saturday, July 11, when members of the Jacob and John Piendl families and their descendants met for a potluck dinner and a music session.
Since a year ago one of their members, Ethel Rae Shattuck Church of Wenatchee, has passed away after a long illness.
The following members were present: Mr. and Mrs. Mark Piendl, John M. Piendl, Mr. and Mrs. Howard P. Shattuck, all of Toppenish; Mr. and Mrs. W.D. Statts, Oregon City; Mr. and Mrs. A.L. Rosenhall, Salt Lake, Utah; Mrs. Velma Des Brisay and granddaughter, Diane Des Brisay, Portland, Ore.; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Lingo, Mr. and Mrs. William Lingo, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lingo, Cheryle, John Steven and Paula, Vancouver; Mrs. Ida M.
