TO OPERATE 'BOYS TOWN' AT HUSUM
White Salmon Citizens Form Columbia Boys Association, Inc.; Camp Columbia
To Be Located On 65-acre Tract
WHITE SALMON (Special) -- Action, not words, is the order
of the day with a group of White Salmon citizens concerning the question
of America's most important investment, the American boy.
On April 1, the Columbia Boys Association, Inc. will
install a potential Washington "Boys Town" at Camp Columbia on a 65 acre
property close to Spring Creek, Husum. The institution has as its objective
the development of a boys program mainly for boys whose home life has been
impaired; thus endangering the possibility of the youngster's future graduation
into healthy useful citizenship.
Cooperating with the State Welfare department, the camp
will be open for all boys from 10 years up and will be strictly of a constructive
and preventive nature and not corrective.
The institution will be developed to conform with state
requirements and, besides providing facilities for the youngsters to complete
their Scholastic program at public schools, vocational shops will be added
to teach them trade that will aid in the industrial field when they are of
age to go on their own.
Buildings on the property will be improved and altered
to accommodate the first twelve boys, and the property will then be surveyed
and the site of the future buildings decided upon.
The charter which has been applied for, provides for
a non-profit corporation with no capital stock and with permission to raise
money for the Institution's maintenance by any legitimate means.
