NO DIVISION OF COUNTY

Arguments for and against the division of Klickitat County were heard by the committee on county and county boundaries of the House of representatives at Olympia one night last week. Twenty minutes were given to the divisionists, thirty minutes to the anti-divisionists and ten minutes to the divisionists again for rebuttal. Mr. A.R. Hayes an attorney and real estate man of White Salmon and Judge McKinney of Kelso appealed for the divisionists during the first twenty minutes and Mr. Hayes of White Salmon and Mr. Coates of Trout Lake appeared for the same side in rebuttal. Other representatives of the White Salmon interests were Mr. Colburn a hotel man, Mr. Van Vorst, a real estate man, Mr. Spencer, all of White Salmon. Rev. Mr. Tate an important minister of the gospel of Oregon, and Mr. McClintock a real estate farmer of White Salmon.
Representing the anti-divisionists were nine farmers, property owners and taxpayers from the new proposed county. The opposing side represented a remarkable contrast. On the one side were the lawyers, real estate men, bankers, the hotel men and office seekers, while on the other side against county division with the nine farmers protesting against the many bad features of division. The divisionists under the leadership of Mr. Hayes handled the subject cleverly and whatever else may be said of those who have taken a stand against us in this matter, we want to give them credit for being a bunch of able fighters. Closing for the farmers of the proposed new county who are opposing division, Hon. N.B. Brooks handled his subject in a surprising form and endeared himself to the hearts of the anti-divisionists present and showed himself to be many times worth the compliment paid him when he a Democrat was elected to represent his county by a people more than 80 percent republican. The telegrams which reached our city, Monday afternoon, announcing that County Division had been killed in the House, with the most conclusive evidence possible of the efficient work of our representative.
Work of this kind will not be forgotten and Mr. Brooks name will go down in the history of our locality as one of its most valuable citizens.
