MINERAL SPRINGS HOTEL IS SWEPT BY A FIRE
The large three-story building known as the Blockhouse
Mineral Springs Hotel was destroyed by fire late Wednesday night. The blaze
started in the bathhouse, adjoining the hotel, and as there was no pressure
water system, the entire structure was on fire in a few minutes. Only a few
articles were saved, -- furniture, bedding, clothing, all going up in the
fire.
Manager Hooker says the loss is about $15,000, with insurance
of $7000 in the Abeling insurance agency of Goldendale. It is quite likely,
he says, that new buildings will go up, but they will be in the way of small
cabins, but completely furnished. The bathhouse will have to be rebuilt,
and a small hotel structure, for the accommodation of tourists.
This hotel was built 20 years ago, but never attracted
much attention until Hooker and Carratt took charge of it about ten years
ago, when many modern improvements were made, -- such as electric lights,
modern baths, beautiful grounds, fine scenery, and gravel roads.
What has given the place great fame is the mineral springs.
Dr. F.H. Collins of this city had this to say; "For the past several years
I have referred many patients suffering with rheumatism, neuritis, and different
forms of skin troubles to these Mineral Spring; and will state benefits have
been exceedingly gratifying. Under the new management, I considered this
place equal to any in the Northwest."
A few years ago Mr. Carratt sold out his interest to
Manager Hooker, moved to Goldendale, and took up his old occupation of a
photographer.
