LAWRENCE BLOWERS AND FAMILY 1889
Lawrence Blowers, the oldest son of Amby S. and Ellen
Blowers, was born in Iowa, April 18, 1867.
The family soon after moved to Minnesota and Lawrence
received his education in that state. He began in the mercantile business
with his father when fifteen pears of age.
In 1889 the family mowed to Hood River and "Blowers &
Son" bought the store owned by E.L. Smith, who was the leading merchant of
the town.
On August 29, 1891, Mr. Blowers was married to Miss Bertha
Mifflin, a native of Washington, D.C. Her father was from Pennsylvania and
from the same family as General Thomas Mifflin, president of the Continental
Congress and later Governor of Pennsylvania.
Mifflin County and town of Pa. received the name from
this family. When the O.N.G. was organized in Hood River Mr. Blowers became
a member and served three years as Lieutenant of Co. D., his father being
Captain. Mr. Blowers spent one year in Sumpter, Oregon, in the mercantile
business, and was elected Sumpter's first mayor.
In Hood River he was the second mayor.
Mr. and Mrs. Blowers have four children, Paul, Loyd,
Ellen and Ruth.
Paul Blowers is now (1918) in France with the U.S. Army.
