FT. BLOCKHOUSE, OLD LANDMARK
This historic building was erected in 1855 by the army under the direction of Lieut. Day from Fort Dalles. It was speeded by an encounter between Major Haller and 100 soldiers from Fort Dalles and 1500 Yakima Indians under Chief Kamiakin in which the whites were put to flight back to Fort Dalles. After its erection a few miles from the present site of Goldendale, at Blockhouse, the fort served as a refuge from the Indians for early settlers. Soldiers were stationed at the fort until 1860 and it was kept in readiness for use until 1879. Now an historic monument at Brooks Memorial Park, old Fort Blockhouse for a time was placed on the court house lawn here. It was originally a two-story structure, but some of the timbers became lost in the many times the fort was moved.
