History of Early Pioneer Families of Hood River, Oregon. Compiled by Mrs. D.M. Coon
JOHN DIVERS AND FAMILY D.M.C. 1862
John Divers came to Hood River in 1882 with his father,
Davis Divers; they came from Oregon City, going East by way of "Barlow's
Pass" south of Mt. Hood, thence to The Dalles, and over the trail from The
Dalles to Hood River.
The entire distance was traveled with wagon and oxen,
theirs being the first wagon to come into Hood River traveling on its own
wheels. John Divers took land near his father's homestead at Summit. In 1873
he was married to Mrs. Jerome Winchell, a daughter of Peter Neal, pioneer
of 1860. At the time of their marriage, Mrs. Winchell had four children to
whom Mr. Divers became stepfather.
For a short time they continued to live on her farm,
later they moved to his claim at the place called Bloucher station. As the
years passed more children came to claim their love and labor until eight
had been added to their household. Their names were Divers, James, Perry,
John, Newton, Dollie, May and Julia.
Dollie became Mrs. English, May married Mr. Sellinger
and Julia is now Mrs. Estes.
Mrs. Divers died of tuberculosis on the farm in 1888.
She was forty four years of age at the time, and the mother of twelve children
but was still young and handsome in appearance.
