DAM DEDICATION PLANNING, OTHER EVENTS ANNOUNCED
Emphasis was on future planning, when Goldendale businessmen
met for the weekly Monday luncheon of their chamber of commerce this week.
No. 1 item was the offer of Frank Seabeck, University of Washington community
development specialist, to bring representatives of the Town of Leavenworth
to show pictures and explain how that city evolved a theme and became the
Bavarian mountain resort counterpart in Washington -- something that led
to its designation as "All-American City."
Seabeck will bring the Leavenworth people -- a Pauline
Watson, who was in on the community development planning of that city from
its beginning, and a businessman representative yet to be selected -- to
an evening meeting of the Chamber next Monday. This will be held at 7:30
p.m. at the Golden Agate Room at the Oasis Cafe. It will be in addition to
the noon luncheon.
Larry Boardman, chairman of the business and industry
subcommittee of KLICK, sent out a special appeal, to "every single businessman
in Goldendale to please make it a point to attend. This is a golden opportunity
for businessmen to get first-hand information on how Leavenworth did it,"
he said.
No. 2 related to planning for the September dedication
of John Day dam. Joe Dressel and Daryl Spalding said their committee had
suggested several items for souvenir sales articles. They mentioned polished
rock key chain fobs, pennants and bumper stickers bearing the name of the
dam and the city, and similar items.
A budget for costs of advertising in commemorative newspaper
editions was discussed, centered around a planned edition by an upriver
newspaper.
No. 3 related to an announcement of coming events --
the Northwest Public Power picnic scheduled for Maryhill Park August 11,
and the convention of Washington CB radio fans at the county fairgrounds
the same weekend.
It was announced, also, that State Senator Al Henry will
speak to an evening meeting at the Chamber, probably August 6 or 12, on the
subject of highway problems, Henry is chairman of the legislative joint committee
on highways and of an interstate Western States highway study committee.
The subject of telephone service was brought up for
discussion. It was suggested that representations be made to United Telephone
Co., which might care to send a representative to discuss its service problems
with the city's businessmen.
Announcement also was made of the luncheon this Friday
of the Republican Women's Club, at which Slade Gorton, candidate for attorney
general, will speak. The meeting is open to the public, and will be at the
Oasis at noon, it was said.
