INCONSISTENT TEARS
N.B. Brooks, Democratic candidate for the legislature,
has wept tears, great lachrymal gobs of crocodile drippings, when pointing
out to voters the awful burden of county division. His imagery would resolve
itself into a bowed down figure staggering along under a heavy load.
Yet this same gentleman has been one of the leading advocates
of a street paving proposition in Goldendale which calls for a first expenditure
of $90,000, and it is said that is not the finish. This will have to be carried
by a town with a population of 1300.
As to the merits of the paving plan we have little to
say. It will undoubtedly be a fine improvement. But the increased cost of
county division would be infinitesimal as compared with the cost of street
paving to Goldendale property owners. Mr. Brooks is not pointing out the
burdens of extra taxation in Goldendale.
Hollering against county division on the score of increased
taxes comes with poor grace from one who is willing to pile on the still
higher taxes elsewhere.
