HOLD A MASS MEETING

There was a mass meeting held in Goldendale last Friday night for the purpose of discussing the proposed county division. A committee had just returned from Lyle where they supposedly were going to meet a legislative committee from the idea conveyed them in a telegram sent to Lyle from Senator Chappell in which he asked that Lyle withhold their remonstrance petitions until the arrival of a committee. The county was well represented at the meeting held in Goldendale. A resolution rebuking Senator John E. Chappell was passed, for the introduction of a bill creating a new county from the west end of Klickitat, a copy of this resolution was telegraphed Senator Chappell. Representatives were present from the west end and stated remonstrance petitions were being circulated and that outside of a small ring the creation of a new county was not being generally ask for. Considerable stir was made over the fact that Senator Chappell assured the people that the bill would be killed in the committee and asked that the remonstrance petitions be with held and it was later learned that the bill was reported from the Senate Committee and placed on the general calendar of the Senate.
A meeting was held here last Thursday afternoon and in remonstrance to the proposed new county division with ______ planning some line of action against it. It was learned just before the afternoon train left for Lyle that a legislative committee was to be in Lyle during the afternoon so a committee of business men from here was sent down to confer with them. The committee consisted of W.B. Presby, Jake Crocker and Sam Wates. A committee of five will go to Olympia to attend to county division matters there.
The committee at Olympia have reported that the bill has been taken from the Senate Calendar and is in the hands of the committee again for argument. It is here that the true existing circumstances will be given, and without doubt there will be little chance of the bill getting on the calendar again.
The Pomona Grange met Tuesday afternoon in this city and passed a resolution objecting to the bill and ordered a copy of it to be wired to Senator Chappell.
