HEALTH HAD ITS FOLLOWING, OLD CUT SHOWS
Blockhouse Mineral Springs provided a strong attraction
in the past, as this old cut of unknown vintage, resurrected from the Sentinel's
morgue will testify. The auto models seem to place the time at about 1930.
The Mineral Springs were built in 1909 by a corporation
of 16 owners. Later the ownership came to a company of Hooker, Grimes and
Winch, with T.A. Hooker becoming eventual sole owner.
In 1934 the building in the picture burned down, and
a new one started by Hooker. The same year he sold the place to Mrs. S.E.
Miller from Seattle and she is still the proprietress. She finished the present
building at the site. Formerly she had been in private nursing work.
Closely approximating the mineral formula of the human
body, the waters from the springs at Blockhouse are among the few genuine
mineral waters in the country. They have effected many amazing cures for
a variety of diseases, Mrs. Miller stated, including arthritis, all forms
of rheumatism, stomach, intestinal and liver ailments, sinus, and others.
This is due to the balanced waters of the baths.
People formerly came from all over the land to take up
residence at the Springs while taking treatments. For the past two years,
no in-patients have been accepted, Mrs. Miller said, but treatments are still
being given on call.
Many persons who have regained their health testify to
the efficacy of the waters of the resort five miles west of Goldendale on
the Klickitat road. Though little publicized, compared to the more famous
spas of the United States, the local springs have done wonders over the years
in the curing people when other medical sciences have been baffled.
