NEW GRAVES FOR TRIBAL REMAINS

The Dalles - Removal of Indian bones from Grave Island, abandoned as a burying ground since the 1894 flood, began Wednesday, Dec. 21, and was finished Friday, Dec. 21. Workmen moved immediately upstream to Memaloose Island, more modern Indian cemetery. Grave Island is immediately upstream from The Dalles dam and Memaloose is five miles above that. Both will be submerged by waters impounded behind the dam. The removals were closely supervised by both Indian tribal representatives and the Army Engineers who contacted with William Gross mortuary of Auburn, Calif. to do the actual work. Only authorized workers and supervisors were allowed on Grave Island. The only photography permitted was for government records. Remains of Indians from Grave Island will be kept in a mortuary at The Dalles until a vault overlooking the river here is constructed. Those from Memaloose Island will be buried in a new Cemetery on the Washington shore, a mile above the dam.
