GOLDENDALE LEGION PLANS TO SAVE OLD HISTORIC RELIC
According to Joe Zaharis, commander of the Louis Leidl
Post, of the American Legion of Goldendale, in order to save one of the
historical buildings of the county from destruction, members of the Goldendale
post expect to move the old Blockhouse which once guarded the military road
7 miles west of this city, and make a public monument of it. At present this
building is located near the Odd Fellows Cemetery, and is in a location which
is extremely dangerous from fire in the summer.
It is expected the building will be moved onto property
belonging to the Goldendale commercial club. Some years ago the blockhouse,
which figured prominently in a number of Indian wars, was found on a farm
where it was being used for a woodshed. It was moved to its present location
and the Goldendale post of the Legion, realizing the historical value of
the structure, decided to move it into the city. It is expected this will
be done it in a short time.
