PETRIFIED FOREST IN ROOSEVELT SECTION
A Roosevelt (eastern Klickitat) resident writes to the
Arlington Bulletin: in your Leaflet of the Wonders Adjacent to Arlington,
such as Indian Pictures, etc., why not include the petrified forest near
Roosevelt? Some are buried under a lava flow, but lots of it is exposed.
California has their giant redwoods, but we have giant redwood, vastly older,
millions of years, petrified and turned into beautiful agate.
We have stumps and trees on the hillside, at Roosevelt,
10 feet across. Have been larger, but the molten lava destroyed part of them.
The Arizona petrified forest has no more beautiful specimens. The only drawback
is the climb, but a trail or footpath could easily be made.
The Roosevelt man's letter, says the Arlington editor,
contains some valuable information, and it is our belief that very few people
in this section and Klickitat realize that such a wonderful attraction is
right at our very door.
It has been only a few days ago that we heard of the
petrified forest across the river at Roosevelt, and were given the opportunity
to inspect some specimens.
The forest might prove a greater drawing card from a
tourist standpoint than the Indian writings, which are indeed interesting.
We would suggest that some civic organizations stand
over a delegation to inspect this place and see what could be done to make
a footpath or road to the forest, which no doubt stood millions of years
ago.
Deputy Klickitat county sheriff A.H. Binns of Goldendale,
an old time resident of the Roosevelt section, confirms the testified forest
attraction, having been over the location.
The matter may come up before the Goldendale Chamber
of Commerce at its next meeting early in August according to reports.
