"County Doings"
In a little rural cemetery, not far from Lyle, is the burial place of Frederick Balch, who as the author of the "Bridge of the Gods," wrote a romance dealing with Indian legendary tales, made for himself a name in the history of Pacific coast literature. The stone over the grave of Frederick Balch is of rough, natural granite, quarried from the hills he loved. Out of the legends gathered he wove a story that will ever be a greater monument to his memory, and the genius that possessed him, than any pillar admiring friends have erected. Not far from his grave is reared the little church of the community, a large share of the carpenter work having been done by Mr. Balch himself. When the family resided at Goldendale, in early days, his father, James Balch, served as county judge of Klickitat county. A copy of his famous work, "The Bridge of the Gods," is now accessible in the Goldendale Free Public Library.
