One of the names suggested for the new county and in
the list to be voted on is "Chiwauna," which is Indian for Big River. Many
seem to think it would be an appropriate name on account of the county's
south boundary line being the Columbia river.
Posters announcing Husum's candidacy for the county seat
as follows: "Husum -- the most central point in the new proposed county;
located on the White Salmon river, at the junction of five roads; abundance
of good water; beautiful surroundings; an ideal location for county
seat."
Lyle is making a strenuous campaign for new county seat
honors. It is a foregone conclusion that the race is between Lyle and White
Salmon, with chances favoring the latter. It is really a question of which
you want for the county seat, the unincorporated town of Lyle, most of the
platted area of which is owned by the Townsite Co., which could use a favorable
county seat vote for townsite booming purposes, or the incorporated town
of White Salmon with all the advantages for a county seat.
