CHURCH IS DEDICATED
Saint Francis Catholic Church Completed With Little Debt
St. Francis Catholic church of this place was dedicated
Sunday by Reverend Willghen of Vancouver, assisted by Reverends Francis and
Pius of White Salmon and Hood River respectively. The dedicatory sermon was
a most interesting inspiring one, and the singing was delight to those in
attendance. It was rendered by the Sisters of Vancouver, one of whom is the
possessor of an exceptionally fine soprano voice. After the services dinner
was served at the Colburn Hotel. Several from Hood River, Mosier and The
Dalles were in attendance, as well as from the countryside.
The dedication is the happy culmination of the efforts
of Father Francis begun the 19th of last March when there was only $10 in
the treasury. He was successful in raising $2,000, all but $500 of it in
California. A benevolent lady in New York contributed the $500. As the cost
of the church is $2,600, there remains an indebtedness of $600, which Father
Francis hopes to raise in White Salmon with little delay.
The building is 30x60, with a tower of 60 feet high,
surrounded by a cross six feet high. The church is erected on a light eminence
on the side of Grachy hill west of town. It is visible from all parts of
the town. Its cross, brilliantly lighted by electric bulbs, is seen from
a long distance and is a flashlight message the spiritual as well as the
material is considered in White Salmon.
