"Goldendale And Near-by Points"
County division's first gun for the season was fired
at White Salmon, following the Good Roads meeting last Tuesday. At the smoker
held in the evening at the Woodmen hall, the county division was discussed
by nearly all the delegates. Upon motion of W.W. Swan, William Coate was
elected chairman, and F.G. Dunnicliff was elected secretary.
Attorney J.L. Sutherland made the first talk on the subject,
outlining the work done and the mistakes by a former committee. He advised
coming to an understanding with Goldendale as to a boundary line, and leave
the naming of the county, election of all officers, etc., to a vote of the
people. Mr. C.L. Colburn agreed mainly with Mr. Sutherland's views. W.C.
Allaway favored leaving the Klickitat river in the old county and making
Major creek the boundary.
William Coate of Trout Lake; F.E. Flynn of White Salmon;
C.W. Moore, of Trout Lake; Wm. Olson, of Husum, and Theodore Suksdorf, of
Bingen, all spoke encouragingly of county division and leaving the entire
matter to a vote of the people.
Finally, to get the matter squarely before the meeting,
A.R. Hayes, of White Salmon, introduced the following motion; each precinct
west of the line between ranges 13 and 14, select a delegate to act on a
committee to be organized for the purpose of taking such steps as may be
necessary for securing the county division, and the secretary receive notices
of selection of delegates and report them. The motion was carried.
Another motion was introduced and carried, as follows:
That a member from each voting precinct be appointed by the chairman to
constitute a committee to supervise the selection of delegates to constitute
the regular county division committee. The chairman appointed the following:
Charles Spencer, of White Salmon; E.E. Bartholomew, Glenwood; D.W. Baxter,
Major Creek; W. Scott Coe, Snowden; D.W. Coate, Trout Lake, Wm. Olson, Husum;
A.J. Henderson, Bingen; Wm. Morginson, Appleton; Herbert Williams, Fruit
Valley; D. Ewing, Lyle; A.E. Peck, Laurel; W.S. Bates, Bristol.
