COUNTY DIVISION CARRIES
Over One Thousand Want Self Government and Two Hundred Against
SPENCER WINS FOR LEGISLATURE
Sutherland Distances Rivals for Judge - Ramsay for Attorney, Smith Runs Like
a Jack Rabbit, Ward for Engineer, Warwick Wins By Hair, Hay Has Walk Away
for Governor, Ward Will Survey Line for the New County
The straw vote on the matter of county division in the
territory to be laid off resulted overwhelmingly in favor of division, 1032
for and 223 against.
White Salmon precinct cast 281 votes and only 2 were
against division. Fruit Valley precinct did better, there being but one
dissenting vote out of a total of 245. Trout Lake, 126 for and 6 against;
Lyle 38 for and 65 against; Glenwood, 52 for and 53 against; Grand Dalles
19 votes evenly divided; Wrights station (Klickitat precinct) 22 against
and 8 for; Bingen 32 for and 12 against; Husum 55 for and 12 against; Appleton,
86 for and 12 against; Major Creek, 58 for and 5 against; Laurel, 48 for
and 12 against; Rockland, 8 for, 11 against; Hartland 4 for and 10 against.
County division carried by a vote of 1032 for and 223
against. It was better, even, than was expected. Evidently there are a lot
of people in the west end who what division for "mercenary" reasons. It indicates
that all the "politicians" are not in White Salmon. It shows that the people
in the west end are thoroughly imbued with the principle of self government,
that they are alive to their best interests, and have had the spunk to say
so. It is a notice to the Goldendale protesters against division that not
the few but the many are demanding to be cut off. The opposition against
division in this end was largely centered in Lyle, Klickitat and Camas Prairie
precincts, which are on the east line of the proposed new county. With more
investigation of the matter the Enterprise believes that Camas will swing
enthusiastically for it.
This does not end county division, however. Division
is done by the legislature, and the same work will have to be done in that
body that was done in the last legislature when the bill was passed through
the senate but killed in the House, largely through the efforts of Representative
Hornibrook.
Chas. Spencer of White Salmon polled a larger majority
against Hornibrook than was anticipated. To several his election is a surprise
as is his been considered well nigh impossible to elect a west end man over
a candidate from the central part. His total vote is 1102, giving him a majority
of 230 over Hornibrook.
