Whitcomb Cabin placed with Historic Places
Charles H. Odegaard, Executive Director of the Washington
State Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, announced today that Whitcomb
Cabin, located south of Glenwood, Washington in Klickitat County, has been
placed in the National Register of Historic Places.
The cabin belonged to Stephen S. Whitcomb. The Whitcombs
settled in the area in 1875. The Fulda postoffice was first located in this
cabin, from 1877 to 1881, and served 8 or 9 families. It is one of very few
original buildings still standing in the valley. Many of the others were
destroyed by fire.
The National Register of Historic Places records the
tangible reminders of the history of the United States and is the official
schedule of the nation's cultural property that is worth saving. A property
placed in the National Register is provided a degree of protection from arbitrary
alteration and destruction by federally funded projects and the owner is
eligible for consideration to receive grant-in-aid funds to assist in the
restoration of the property.
The National Register Program in Washington State is
administered by the Office of Archaeology and Historic Pre- servation, Washington
State Parks and Recreation Commission.
The body which recommends properties to the National
Register is the Washington State Advisory Council on Historic Preservation,
Mrs. Carolyn Feasey, Chairman.
