BURIAL GROUNDS FOR THE INDIANS
Memaloose island in the Columbia would be set aside for
the use of Yakima Indians and confederated tribes as a burial ground under
a bill passed this week by the senate. The measure will go to the house.
This action has been discussed for years, but few knew is has gotten this
far.
The Indians in the upper valley have never expressed
much interest in the matter, but there are between 300 and 500 living along
the river from White Salmon northward who have been greatly interested in
the plan.
Memaloose island, or the Island of the Dead, is located
in the vicinity of Fallbridge. It has been the burial ground of the nation
for many years, and this bill has been pushed to assure the Indians that
it would not pass into other hands.
