BINGEN'S PROGRESS
Advent of Railway Stirs Things Up - Names of Stations
A visit to Bingen last week found the residents and
businessmen of that promising town well pleased with the outlook, although
waiting patiently for the first train to come through on the north bank.
While many are prepared to wait until spring for that important event, the
announcement that trains are expected to be running from Kennewick to Vancouver
by the first of November, is good news. Most of the town lots in the business
district have been sold, and while but one new store building is now in course
of erection, a lively building time will be witnessed this fall and winter.
Great piles of ties are being unloaded on the fine grade
of 300 feet wide that has been completed, and there will be over four miles
of tracks laid at Bingen. This fact is very good evidence of the plans of
the railroad company are making for Bingen.
It will be the nearest station for passengers on the
north bank road for the entire territory of the White Salmon valley, as well
as Hood River and Underwood. The stations between the station opposite The
Dalles and the hot springs have been named as follows: Grand Dalles, Skagit,
Lyle, Villa, Bingen, Hood, Cooks and Collins. The passenger stations will
be ten miles apart and every five miles will be a siding for the handling
of freight. The next stopping place west of Bingen will be called Hood and
is located a mile and a half below Underwood. - Glacier.
