Each page
was considered to have an “A” and a “B” side.
Page Breaks are shown in
red. They identify the Township, the
date, the “stamped” page number (such as 277-A), and the “actual” page number
WITHIN the township (page 1 of 31).
Column 1 indicates the
page number ( 1, 2, ... ) and the house
number.
Note that the house
numbers started over for each township.
Note that the census
takers sometimes got confused and reused house numbers.
Column 2 indicates the
last name.
Last names may be “double
entered”: for example, “Guffy / Guffey”.
The intent was to help support searching through the data using a
computer. The first entry may be the
interpretation of what appears on the census page, and the second entry is an
alternative interpretation of what the name may have been.
Column 3 indicates the
first name.
First names may be
“double entered”: for example, “Horris / Horace”. The intent was to help support searching through

Column 4 indicates
relationship, relative to the head-of-household.
Column 5 indicates the
person’s sex, m (male) or f (female).
Note that the name
“Francis” normally indicated a male, and “
Column 6 indicates
race. There were 3 choices for the
census taker: white, black, mu (mixed).
Column 7 indicates the
person’s age, normally in years.
Column 8 indicates how long
the husband-and-wife shown have been married to each other.
It does -not- take into
account prior marriages, so you can have children from a first marriage that
are older than the number of years shown for the marriage.
Column 9 is a
miscellanous column that shows an inconsistent variety of information.
Sometimes it is the job
or activity of the individual, such as “Farmer”.
Sometimes it is in the
format “3 / 2 ch” which indicates the total number of children that person had
up to the current date, followed by the total number of those children that are
still living on the current date. The
second number should never be greater than the first number.
Sometimes the column is
an indication of a second marriage.
There are also red
Cross-Reference entries scattered periodically throughout the pages.
These Cross-reference
entries are intended to help the reader find information in another source,
usually another census, but sometimes marriage records, or cemetery records,
etc.
The 1850 census doesn’t
require page numbers in order to uniquely identify a family, so “house 1012”
seems sufficient to point the reader into the 1850 census.
The 1860 census also
doesn’t require page numbers in order to uniquely identify a family, so “house
1186” seems sufficient to point the reader into the 1860 census.
The 1870 census does
require page numbers since each township starts over with “house 1”, so
021.089 would indicate page 021, house
089.
