Each page was considered to have an “A” and a “B” side.
Page Breaks are shown in red. They identify the Township, the date, the “stamped” page number (such as 277-A), and the “actual” page number WITHIN the township (page 1 of 31).
Column 1 indicates the page number ( 1, 2, ... ) and the house number.
Note that the house numbers started over for each township.
Note that the census takers sometimes got confused and reused house numbers.
Column 2 indicates the last name.
Last names may be “double entered”: for example, “Guffy / Guffey”. The intent was to help support searching through the data using a computer. The first entry may be the interpretation of what appears on the census page, and the second entry is an alternative interpretation of what the name may have been.
Column 3 indicates the first name.
First names may be “double entered”: for example, “Horris / Horace”. The intent was to help support searching through the data using a computer. The first entry may be the interpretation of what appears on the census page, and the second entry is an alternative interpretation of what the name may have been.
Column 4 indicates relationship, relative to the head-of-household, or previous head-of-h.
Column 5 indicates race. There were 2 basic choices for the census taker: white or black.
** In Cool Springs, Township 134, page 7, the Young Family is all marked as “C”.
It the 1920 census, some black families were marked as “C”.
Column 6 indicates the person’s sex, m (male) or f (female).
Note that the name “Francis” normally indicated a male, and “Frances” normally indicated a female. Phonetically the names sound the same, but the census takers sometimes had a difficult time spelling the names correctly.
Column 7 indicates the person’s birthmonth and birthyear. Jan and June are particularly difficult to decipher when scribbled, so many of those are tentative.
Column 8 indicates the person’s age, normally in years.
Note that the census was in the summer.
Sometimes it appears that the birthdate was given, and the age was computed from the birthdate. Other times it appears that the person said “I am 20 years old and was born in June” in which case their birthyear and/or age may be incorrect.
Ages followed by “mth” or “mths” indicates “months” instead of years.
Column 9 indicates how long the husband-and-wife shown have been married to each other.
It does -not- take into account prior marriages, so you can have children from a first marriage that are older than the number of years shown for the marriage.
Column 10 is a miscellanous column that shows an inconsistent variety of information.
Sometimes it is the job or activity of the individual, such as “Farmer”.
Sometimes it is in the format “3 / 2 ch” which indicates the total number of children that person had up to the current date, followed by the total number of those children that are still living on the current date. The second number should never be greater than the first number.
Sometimes the column is an indication of a second marriage.
There are also red Cross-Reference entries following many of the households.
These Cross-reference entries are intended to help the reader find information in other sources, usually another census, but sometimes marriage records, or cemetery records, etc.
The 1850 census doesn’t require page numbers in order to uniquely identify a family, so “house 1012” seems sufficient to point the reader into the 1850 census.
The 1860 census also doesn’t require page numbers in order to uniquely identify a family, so “house 1186” seems sufficient to point the reader into the 1860 census.
The 1870 census does require page numbers since each township starts over with “house 1”, so 021.089 would indicate page 021, house 089.

This list is -NOT- a 100% complete list of every person on the 1900 census.
This list -is- intended to eventually include every individual on the 1900 Rutherford County Census. It is still a work-in-progress as time allows.
The intent is to make a reference tool that is useful, not to exactly transcribe the census. It doesn’t do a lot of good to merely repeat errors from the census.
Thus, if the person’s name is listed on the census as ‘Bud’, then it may be reflected in this document as John ‘Bud’. Likewise, some entries vary in terms of sex from census to census, and ages can vary tremendously (as much as a dozen years) from one census to the next.
Some names had multiple permutations, such as :

It was also fairly common to change a name that ended in an ‘a’ to ‘er’, so Della became ‘Deller’, and ‘Ida’ became ‘Ider’.
‘David’ and ‘Daniel’ can be particularly difficult to decipher when scribbled, so consider those names extra carefully.
