About the Civil Registration for Marriages Microfilms

The marriage extracts on these pages cover all the civil registration marriages that were filmed. They include the years 1855 through 1875 plus 1881 and 1891. Please e-mail me directly if you find any errors.

Below is a list of the Family History Library film numbers. This shows all the parishes that are located on each film.
Remember each parish has been assigned a number. For parishes in Islay, these are:

Kilarrow (or Bowmore) - 536
Kilchoman - 540
Kildalton - 541
Kilmeny - 543
Oa - 543
Portnahaven - 547

Sometimes our families moved around. I remember following one Smith family back and forth between Islay and Jura. So the idea is: if you think your family may be found in a different nearby parish (but still in Argyll), check whether that parish is included on the same film and perhaps you can kill two birds with one stone. I hope that makes sense.

**** Please note that in some years the Islay parishes are divided across two films.

Now - in addition - please remember two things:

1. Civil Registration began 1 January 1855. Prior to that date you must access parish records or other kinds of records.


2. Even though the LDS only were allowed to film the actual registrations in these years, the marriage registration information for the other years is still available. In years not covered by the films you should first find the couple on the General Index to Marriage Registrations. Find the groom in the male list and find the bride in the female list. Make sure that this is the right couple by checking to see that both have the same parish and registration number. You can then order a certificate from Scotland or you can hire someone to look up and transcribe the information for you. You can also search the records and order certificates on the Scots Origins web site
