My Dad, Edmund GALUS, served in the U. S. Army from 23 Jan 1941 through 2 Sep 1944.  I found a composite photo in Dad's album of Troop G, 14th Cavalry taken in 1941 at Camp Funston, Kansas.  From what I have gleaned from the internet Camp Funston is now Fort Riley, Kansas.

I scanned the composite photo and have listed all the individuals on it.  Composite photo Troop G

Me Marge GALUS m. Bruce

In March 2006 I received an e-mail from Paweł Bandur who had found my webpage through an internet search.  Paweł, who lives in northwest Poland, wrote to say that his grandfather Józef  BAŃDUR was born in Łęki Dolne on 03 March 1895.  Paweł had ordered the LDS microfilms for the Parish of Łęki Górne that I had referenced on my webpages, and he wrote to ask for tips on how to use these films.  At the time, the only LDS Family History Center (FHC) in Poland was in Warsaw, which is a several hour train ride from Paweł's residence.  I have the microfilms for this parish on extended loan from my local FHC.  I offered to help Paweł find more about his family in Łęki, until he could make the trip to Warsaw to view the films himself.  I found the birth/baptism record of Paweł's grandfather on the date given by Paweł.  As I continued tracking Józef's ancestoral lines, one of his female lines connected with my KOTLARZ family!  Paweł and I are 5th cousins; we share 4th great grandparents.

 Joseph and Victoria KUDRON SOKOL
My Grandparents Stanislaus and Martha KUDRON GALUS were from the neighboring villages of Łęki Górne and Łęki Dolne in the former Tarnov Province of Poland. In the process of going through the LDS microfilms for Łęki parish I've found information on the Nance/Platte County Nebraska family of Joseph and Victoria KUDRON SOKOL. So far I've found no connection between Victoria's and my KUDRON families. Joseph SOKOL's half sister Anna SOKOL was the mother of Louis SOKOL, who married my Great Grandaunt Anna KUDRON (see above).

PaprockiPAPROĆ, noun: fern

My Grandfather Stanislaus GALUS' parents were Andrew and Agnes SZTORC GALUS, neither of whom emmigrated from Poland. Andrew's parents (Stanislaus' grandparents) were Joannes (John) and Maryanna PAPROCKI GALUS.

Stanislaus and his brother Joseph first came to live with their Aunt and Uncle Andrew and Maryanna GALUS PAPROCKI near Tarnov, Platte County, Nebraska. Maryanna was a sister of Stanislaus' father, Andrew.

So far I have not found a connection between Stanislaus' Grandmother, Maryanna PAPROCKI, and Andrew PAPROCKI who married Stanislaus' Aunt Maryanna GALUS. (Gets confusing, doesn't it?) Here is a chart showing the current relationships relationship charts.

Pfeifer My Great Great Grandmother was Anna Maria PFEIFFER \ PFEIFER, born 7 Dec 1821 in Kurzschwarza, Austria, house 17. She was a daughter of Michael PFEIFFER \ PFEIFER and Eva nee RÖSSLER \ ROSSLER. Anna Maria married Ignatz ZACH on 24 Nov 1846 in Kurzschwarza. Anna Maria and Ignatz arrived at the port of New York on 27 June 1874 on the ship America with five of their six children: Franz, Johann (John), Juliana, Walburga and Vincenz. Their oldest son, Ignatz ZACH (my great grandfather), came to the United States two years earlier on the S.S. Hanover. He arrived at the Port of New York on 28 May 1872. He first went to Wisconsin for a short time and then to the St. Mary's community in Platte County, Nebraska, where his parents and siblings later joined him.

It is through my PFEIFFER \ PFEIFER line that I am related to the WIESERs and HOFFMANNs. Anna Maria PFEIFFER\ PFEIFER's father, Michael, had a sister Johanna. Johanna married Mathias WIESER.

Podraza I have two direct PODRAZA lines.  From my GALUS side my 4th great grandparents were Adalbertus \ Wojciech GALUS and Cunegunda nee PODRAZA.  For details about Wojciech and Cunegunda see GALUS.

My second PODRAZA line connects through my grandmother's KUDRON side.

In January 2013 I decided to have my DNA tested through Ancestry.com.  I had my doubts about their 64% British Isles portion of my Genetic Ethnicity Summary, so I decided to test with two other companies.  One was with the National Geographic Genographic Project; the other with 23andMe.  23andMe compares the DNA of all participants and provides a list of people who share your DNA and your possible cousin relationship with them.  People who match can send a request asking if they would be willing to share genomes.  Sharing genomes gives a more detailed comparison between participants.

In September 2013 I shared genomes with a participant whom 23andMe identified as a possible 3rd - 6th cousin; we shared 0.38% DNA across 1 genome segment.  Through further communication, we figured the link would be through the Leki Gorne records.  Using the LDS (Mormon) microfilmed records for that parish, I was able to establish we are 5th cousins.  Our common ancestors were our 4th great grandparents Stanislaus PODRAZA and Margaretha nee PYRCHLA.

My connection to this PODRAZA line is through my grandmother, Martha KUDRON GALUS.  One set of Martha's great grandparents were Jan \ Joannes KUDRON and Apolonia nee PODRAZA.  Apolonia's parents were Stanisluas PODRAZA and Margaretha nee PYRCHLA.

Stanislaus PODRAZA is one of my earliest documented ancestors.  Based on the age noted on his two marriage records, he was born about 1773/1775.  The microfilmed Leki Gorne baptism records begin in 1778, too late to find a birth record for Stanislaus.  He first married Regina ZIMA on 23 Sep 1797 in Leki Gorne; Regina died 23 Jan 1803.  They had 2 children.  Stanislaus then married Margaretha PYRCHLA on 22 Feb 1803 in Leki Gorne.  Margaretha was a daughter of Josephus PRYCHLA and Hedwig MICEK.  I have found 8 children born to Stanislaus and Margaretha.

Schneck My Great Grandmother Agnes Anna Magdalena SCHNECK immigrated from Louisenthal, Prussia, (now Borzysławiec, Poland) to Norfolk, Madison County, Nebraska in the United States about 15 June 1893 with her husband Ferdinand THOMAS, her two sons Herman Charles August, and Adolph George. Her widowed mother, Maria Magdalena THOMAS SCHNECK, accompanied them. Agnes was born on 8 Nov 1872. Her birthplace was probably in Louisenthal, but I have not yet found a source for birth / baptism information for this time period.

SztorcSZTORC, noun: upright

My Great Grandmother Agnieszka SZTORC was born 26 December 1858 in Łęki Górne, Poland, house #162, currently in woj. Podkarpackie. At the time of her birth Łęki Górne was part of an area called Galicia, which was under Austrian rule until after WW I. Agnieszka was a daughter of Jan (John) SZTORC and his second wife Marianna nee TWOREK. Agnieszka married Andrzej (Andrew) GALUS on 16 February 1876 in the Parish of Łęki Górne, Poland. Neither of my Great Grandparents immigrated to the United States. Their son, Stanislaus GALUS, my grandfather, immigrated with his brother Joseph, to Platte County, Nebraska in September 1898. In February 2005 I found two SZTORC first cousins of my grandfather, who immigrated to Chicago.  In April 2011, through a Facebook post, I found Agnieszka's brother, John immigrated to the United States after the death of his wife in Poland.  John married in Chicago and raised a family there.

On June 5, 2003, I received an email from Roman Witek, who lives in Poland. He had entered the name of the Polish village "Łęki Górne" into Google's image search. One of the results was the photograph of the Church in Łęki Górne that I have on one of my pages. From there he began browsing other pages and noticed that we have the SZTORC family surname in common. Roman's grandfather Jozef SZTORC had two brothers who immigrated to the United States. Photographs of these brothers and their families had the name of a Chicago photographer stamped on the back. Roman wondered how one would go about confirming if these brothers, Frank and John, had actually settled in Chicago. He also wondered if by chance we might be related through our SZTORC families. Within a month of my initial search, I found that Roman and I are fourth cousins through our PAPROCKI families. I have not been able to connect our SZTORC families as yet. In February 2005, Joseph ZMUDA, a grandson of Frank SZTORC, one of the immigrant brothers, found our SZTORC page and contacted me.

Roman and I have continued our correspondence. Over the course of several months, Roman sent me a number of beautiful photographs of the Podlesie / Łęki Górne area. He has graciously given me permission to include these glimpses of Poland here on my webpage. Following is a link to the first photograph in the gallery. If you have already viewed the initial set of photos check out the thumbnails page, which will allow you to start anywhere in the gallery.

ThomasI am descended from two separate THOMAS lines, both from the same church parish of Sankt Johannes parish Stettin, Germany, now Szczecin, Poland. This parish includes the Prussian villages of Augustwalde (now Wielgowo, Poland), Blumenthal (Germany), Hoppenwalde (Germany), Louisenthal (now Borzysławiec, Poland) and Viereck (Germany).

My grandfather, Adolph George THOMAS, came to the United States at the age of two with his parents, Ferdinand and Agnes nee SCHNECK, and an older brother Herman. Adolph was born in Louisenthal, Prussia, which is now Borzysławiec, close to the present day Szczecin, Poland. They arrived in New York around 15 June 1893, and settled in Norfolk, Madison County, Nebraska. They then came to the St. Mary's community, near Humphrey, Platte County, Nebraska.  Ferdinand and Agnes had 14 more children after they immigrated to Nebraska.

My second THOMAS line begins with my grandfather Adolph's maternal grandmother.  Maria Magdalena nee THOMAS married Carl Friedrich Wilhelm SCHNECK, probably in Louisenthal, but I have yet to find their marriage record.  They were the parents of Agnes Anna Magdalena SCHNECK.  Carl SCHNECK died in Louisenthal, Prussia on 29 December 1884.  Maria Magdalena THOMAS SCHNECK accompanied her daughter Agnes and son-in-law Ferdinand THOMAS, when they immigrated to the United States.  They arrived in New York around 15 June 1893 aboard the ship Meier, and settled in Norfolk, Madison County, Nebraska.  Anna Maria Magdalena SCHNECK, an older daughter of Maria Magdalena and Carl SCHNECK, had already settled in Norfolk, Nebraska, with her husband Franz Friedrich Wilhelm DOLLERSCHELL.  They arrived at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland on 18 April 1890.

Two years later Ignatz's parents, my great great grandparents Ignatz and Maria PFEIFER ZACH arrived at the port of New York, New York, on the ship America on 27 June 1874, with their five other children: Franz, Johann (John), Juliana, Walburga and Vincenz.

The younger Ignatz married Anna Mary BRAUN, daughter of John Peter BRAUN and Anna Maria SCHROEDER.

My Grandmother, Julia Mary ZACH, daughter of Ignatz and Anna Mary BRAUN, was born in the St. Mary's community. Julia married Adolph THOMAS at St. Mary of the Angels Church in St. Mary's, Nebraska. They spent most of their married life in and around Albion, Boone County, Nebraska.

 Other Researchers:

I've connected with a few other ZACH researchers. I thank them for sharing their family information with me.
E-mail     Susan is also researching the MERFELD and HEMMER lines of her great grandparents. Susan has information on many Platte County, NE families.
E-mail     Joan is married to August John (Gus) WIESER. Gus is my 3rd cousin from the ZACH line and 5th cousin from the PFEIFER line. Ignatz ZACH (the first) and Maria PFEIFER are our GG Grandparents. From the PFEIFER line my GGG Grandfather Michael PFEIFER was a brother of Gus' GGG Grandmother Johanna PFEIFER WIESER.  Joan is also interested in the BROCKHAUS, SOMMER and FANGMAN lines.
