      CANFIELD

Jeff and Nate connect to the CANFIELDs through their paternal Grandmother. This line goes back to Matthew CAMFIELD, who came from Northamton, England and settled in New Haven Colony, Connecticut sometime before 1637. The migration of this line went from New Haven Colony > Newark, New Jersey (1666) > Crawford County, Pennsylvania (1790's) > Kellogg, Wabasha County, Minnesota (1855) > Spooner/Trego, Washburn County, Wisconsin (early 1900's) > points beyond.

A cousin documented this line of the Canfields in the "Camfield, Campfield, Canfield Family in America - one branch descended from Matthew Camfield." Following is a copy of this document, along with additional information that I have gathered on this line.

I have connected with another CANFIELD researcher, Chris JEWETT, who shared some wonderful pictures he had of the CANFIELDs in Minnesota and Wisconsin. These pictures are also included in the following Canfield History.

          The Canfield History in America

Jeff and Nate's direct line from Matthew CAMFIELD is :

      FRUECHTE

Jeff and Nate's GG Grandparents, Henry C. and Sophia FRANZEN FRUECHTE, settled in Houston County, Minnesota. Henry came from Hannover, Germany, in April 1860 and stayed for a time in Chicago, Illinois. It was in Bensonville, a suburb of Chicago, that he met and married Sophia FRANZEN.

The following is the Preface and a History of the FRUECHTE Family from a 1986 FRUECHTE descendant booklet.

Henry and Sophia had ten children. Their daughter Emma married William WIEGREFE 7 Dec 1911. Emma and William are Jeff and Nate's Great Grandparents.

      LAMPSON

Philip (Phillip) W. and Mary "Polly" TRACY LAMPSON are Jeff and Nate's Gr Gr Gr Grandparents. Philip and Polly married on 26 Dec 1831 in Athens County, Ohio. Based on Philip's age at the time of his death, he was born around 1 Jan 1814. According to census records his birthplace was somewhere in Ohio. Philip died 13 May 1884. Polly was a daughter of Jonas P. and Susannah CURTISS TRACY. She was born 20 Oct 1811 in Palmyra, New York. She was 77 yrs, 4 mos, 23 days at time of her death on 16 Mar 1889. Both Philip and Polly died in Kansas and are buried in Hesper Cemetery, Eudora Township, Douglas County, Kansas.

Philip and Polly had eleven or twelve children, depending on the researcher. I am inclined to think it is eleven. Their daughter Polly married Oscar LYONS 7 Aug 1872 in Douglas County, Kansas.

The LAMPSON Families from Ohio, Kansas and Wisconsin

My burning questions RE: the LAMPSON line:

What is Philip's middle name? His middle initial is "W." Is his middle name a family name, as was common at that time? It could give a clue as to his parentage.
          Who are Philip's parents?
--The History of Athens County, Ohio, indicates Philip LAMPSON came to Athens County in 1820.
--If his calculated birth date of about 1 Jan 1814 is correct Philip would have been about 6 years old in 1820.
--So far, the earliest record I have of him is the 1840 Ohio census for Bern Township in Athens County.
--The 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses show his birthplace as Ohio.
--The 1880 census is the first that asks for birthplace of parents. The birthplace for his Father was blank (sigh!!), he gives his Mother's birthplace as Pennsylvania. Philip died in 1884, so 1880 is the only census in which his parents' birthplace would be noted. So...this raises a couple more questions: did his Father die when Philip was very young or was Philip born out of wedlock?

      LYONS

Oscar M. and Polly J. LAMPSON LYONS are Jeff and Nate's Gr Gr Grandparents. According to Jeff and Nate's Grandmother, Oscar was orphaned at a young age and there is no family history available. In the Kansas 1880 federal census Oscar gives his birthplace as Ohio. In 1900 he indicates that his parents were also born in Ohio. At a reunion in June 2001 Nate and Jeff's Grandmother mentioned remembering that a brother of Oscar "tracked" him down in Kansas. She remembered his name was "Friel" (not sure of spelling), but we do not know if his last name was LYONS. He could have been adopted and had a different last name. He did come from Ohio, and at some point Oscar's daughter Luella Mae LYONS CANFIELD, visited her uncle in Ohio. I do not know when this visit took place.

The Oscar LYONS Family from Ohio, Kansas and Wisconsin

My burning questions RE: the LYONS line:

What is Oscar's middle name? His middle initial is "M." Family names were often used as middle names. This could provide some clues.
          Who are Oscar's parents?
Who and where was Oscar's brother "Friel?" Are there more siblings?
Where in Ohio was Oscar born?
I have a death year of 1930, but do not have his actual date of death.
I have yet to find Oscar in the 1860, 1910 and 1920 censuses.

      TRACY

Jeff and Nate's TRACY line goes back to Lieutenant Thomas TRACY, who was born around 1610. The first documentation of him in the colonies is around 1636 in Salem, Essex county, Massachusetts. Most of the information I have on the TRACY line comes from a genealogy that traces the TRACY - McCUNE lines of Athens County, Ohio. The Tracy-M'Cune Genealogical Record was compiled by Mrytie C. Magrath, granddaughter of Samuel and Almira TRACY McCUNE; dated: Camden, N. J., August 6, 1900. A McCUNE researcher sent me a copy of this document. The above mentioned Almira TRACY McCUNE was a sister of Jeff and Nate's Gr Gr Gr Grandmother Mary "Polly" TRACY LAMPSON. Three of Polly's siblings married McCUNE siblings.

The McCUNE researcher has her information at WorldConnect:

          Coder/Myers/Townsend/Tracy/McCune.

Excerpt from The Tracy-M'Cune Genealogical Record:

Stories told by Almira TRACY McCUNE a sister of Mary "Polly" TRACY LAMPSON.

Jeff and Nate have two direct lines from Thomas TRACY -- one way he is their 8th Gr Grandfather the other way he is their 9th Gr Grandfather:

Here's a chart in picture form of the two lines -- TRACY Chart

      WIEGREFE

August and Dorothea CORDES WIEGREFE are Jeff and Nate's Gr Gr Grandparents. August immigrated from Hannover, Germany, around 1868. Dorothea CORDES immigrated with her parents in 1862 from Epsdorf, Germany, when she was about 9 years old. August and Dorothea married 3 Mar 1874 in Houston County, Minnesota. Their son William married Emma FRUECHTE 7 Dec 1911.

The following CORDES/WIEGREFE history was compiled by an unknown researcher. I have included additional information as I have found it.
