Mountain Ties
The people
of the Central Appalachians
Welcome to the Mountain
Ties Website
Our roots
go deep in the Cumberland Mountain area of the Central
Appalachian region and are centered around Dickenson,
Wise and Russell Counties in Southwestern Virginia and
Pike and Letcher Counties in Eastern Kentucky. In the
early 1800's many families moved to this area from
Western North Carolina. Some of these families are
closely associated with a group of people known as
Melungeons. This website will explore the genealogy,
history, folklore, and culture of the people of this
area.
We selected
the name "Mountain Ties" for the site because
the mountains were the common link between all of our
ancestors whether they lived in Virginia, Kentucky, North
Carolina, or Tennessee. Pioneer life, in general, and
mountain life, in particular, was hard and our ancestors
had to be tough, self-reliant, and resilient to survive.
Times have changed but the mountains are still there,
calling us home...tying us to them and to each other.
