You must turn off html before you send your message, as Rootsweb does not accept messages in html -- they will be returned to you without going to the list. If you find that you have a problem sending messages to the list, there are two things to check. First, check that you are using the proper address. DO NOT send messages intended for the list to Siegel-L-request; you must use [email protected] instead. Second, check to see that the e-mail address under which you subscribed to the list is the same e-mail address from which you are trying to send your message. The use of aliases is one possible cause for problems experienced in sending messages.

Contact the List Administrator:

I am the list administrator for the Siegel-L and Siegel-D surname lists. My name is Mary D. Taffet, and you may contact me at any time for help should you need it. My e-mail address is [email protected]. I cannot promise an immediate answer, but I can promise an answer within a day or two.

My lineage:

I am not a direct descendant of any Siegel line, but my husband is (well sort of....they changed their name to Siegel). His line is Meyer Siegel (originally Meyer Saminowitch, Zarminowitch, Zerminowitch or Zeimonowitch) & Mary/Mollie Rosenberg (later called Mary/Mollie Blumberg/Bloomberg) > Isidore/Irving Siegel (birth name Samuel Saminowitch, Zarminowitch, Zerminowitch or Zeiminowitch) & Ida Rubin > Lorraine Siegel & Joseph Jerome Taffet > Steven Mark Taffet (my husband).

-----------------------

Origin of the Siegel family:

I am fairly new to Siegel research, so am really not that familiar with the name just yet. My husband's Siegel family (who incidentally changed their surname from something else to Siegel -- the something else being possibly Saminowitch, Zarminowitch, Zerminowitch or Zeimonwitch) were from the area around Bialystok and Grodno.

Siegel is known to be a Jewish surname, but there may well be more than one origin for the surname. As I learn more about the name, I will add to this information.

If you know of other historical information surrounding the Siegel family, please let me know.

Surname Variants:

A surname variant is one where the name is spelled differently but nevertheless refers to the same family. In some cases variants exist because of errors made by persons transcribing handwritten records. In some cases variants exist because census takers or other persons wrote a name the way it sounded, rather than the way it should be spelled. Lastly, surname variants exist because people, from time to time, choose to change the way their name is spelled.

Known variants of the Siegel surname include (in alphabetical order):

If you know of any surname variants, please send them to me at [email protected], with an indication of the circumstances under which they appeared.
