Since February 1997 most issues of the McWh*rter Genealogy Newsletter have
featured an article,
3-generation register report and list of research sources for a McWh*rter
believed to be an immigrant "progenitor" of a North American McWh*rter family.
As each issue of the newsletter is published those articles, reports and
sources are reprinted here for the benefit of researchers.

Some
of the early North American McWh*rter families featured in this series of articles are
undoubtedly "connected", but evidence is currently lacking to establish what the
relationship might be. The articles and register reports reprinted here should be viewed
with care. They are based on the work of many researchers, some more careful then others.
The information should be used as a guide in your genealogical journey, not as an end to
the journey.
Below
is a brief description (and links) to the
North American "progenitors"
whose stories have already been published in the newsletter.

.

Hugh
McWhorter (cir1690-1750) of Pencader Hundred, New Castle County,
Delaware. Hugh was a linen merchant from County Armagh, Ireland who about 1730 immigrated
to New Castle co., DE where he became a farmer.

Mathew
McWhorter (abt1725-1804) of Salem, Washington County, New York. Mathew
appears to have come from Ballibay, Ireland in 1764 with the congregation of the Rev.
Thomas Clark and settled "New Perth", Salem, Washington co., NY.
. |
 |
John
McWhorter (1739-1813) of Granville, Washington County, New York. John

 |
Thomas
McWhorter (cir1700-cir1760) of New Jersey and Orange co., NY. Thomas is
thought to have been the father of Hugh and Mary of Avoca, Steuben co., NY and a Gilbert,

|
 |
Hugh
E. "Hughey" McWhorter (cir1705-1784) of "Middle
Octorara", Lancaster co., PA and Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle co., DE may provide
an intriguing link between the Hugh McWhorter who came to Pencader Hundred, New Castle
co., DE about 1730 and Moses, David, Henry and the other McWhorters of Lancaster co., PA.
|
 |
Hance
McWhorter (cir1730-abt1773) of Rowan and Mecklinburg cos., NC is
probably a son of John McWhorter [db#5] and grandson of Hugh McWhorter [db#1] of Pencader
Hundred, New Castle co., DE, but conclusive proof is still lacking. Hance's descendants
removed to York co., SC; Lawrence co., AL; and Gibson and Franklin cos., TN

what is now the Province of Quebec, Canada.
|
 |
Samuel
Mehorter (cir1795-bef1861) was born in Ireland. It is not known for
sure if he removed to the United States, but his wife, Mary (Wall or) Watt [db#22148] and
children at least removed to Philadelphia, PA by 1846.
