This wonderful Genealogy Library in West Union is run by both the Adams County Historical Society & the Adams County Genealogical Society. Together they have gathered a lot of the missing information lost in the fire.

 

Other Information

Adams was one of the first of Ohio's 88 counties to be formed. It derives its name from John Adams, our second president. The county seat is situated on the Ohio River 100 miles south of Columbus and 50 miles from Cincinnati. West Union is the county seat.

The most significant feature of the county is the giant earth mound in the form of a serpent located in the Serpent Mound State Memorial claimed as the largest effigy mound in the world, the 1,254 foot structure was constructed by the Hopewell Indians.

Tobacco is the main agricultural product in Adams County. Principle industry includes; apparel, electrical machinery, fabricated metals, food, lumber, bakery items, refrigerator condensers and welded wire products.

Their courthouse burned in 1910, some records were saved, some as early as 1796, others to 1799 including records of several countys before their inception. Probate Court has birth and death records 1888 to 1893, marriage records 1803 to 1853 & from 1910, probate records 1849 to 1860 & from 1910.
