NEWS RELEASE

Jacksonville and Springfield share the unique experience of being home to the Portuguese Protestants who fled to Central Illinois in 1849 to escape religious persecution. The Morgan County Historical Society is celebrating this event with publication of a biography of Antonio de Mattos, pastor of the Portuguese Presbyterian congregations in both communities.

The author, David J. Langum, Sr., is the author of six other books including William M. Kunstler: the Most Hated Lawyer in America, the attorney who defended the “Chicago Seven.” He is currently a Research Professor at Cumberland School of Law, Samford University. Langum is a descendent of de Mattos.
