Generation One

1. THOMAS¹ ELLIS was born in 1683 in Merionethshire, Wales. He married Jane Hughes, daughter of John Hughes and Ellin (--?--), on 31 October 1712 in Gwynedd, Berks County, Pennsylvania. He died on 11 June 1760 in Gwynedd, Berks County.
He immigrated in 1707 to Pennsylvania. He was a Friend (Quaker).
     Edna Harvey Joseph records that Friends of Exeter Monthly Meeting recorded a memorial for Thomas Ellis.
     "Thomas Ellis of Exeter meeting was born in or near Merionethshire in the north of Wales in the year 1683 and came to Pennsylvania about the 24th year of his age, and soon after was Convinced of the Truth, married Jane Hughes, of Gwynedd meeting in the year 1712.
     "He was a hearty lover of Friends and an Elder upwards of thirty years; spent some time in hearing traveling friends company to visit Friends in the back parts of Virginia; was of an innocent life and conversation, a diligent attendent of our meetings both for worship and Discipline, whilst of ability of Body, and Exemplery in Humble Waiting therein.
     "Although towards the latter part of His Time he was pretty much deprived of His natural Faculties and became like unto a child yet in the main quiet and Still to the end of His time here, which was 11th of the 6 mo, 1760 aged about 77 years.
     "Signed on behalf of Exeter meeting held at Maiden Creek 7.29.1762
               "Benj. Lightfoot, clerk."

JANE HUGHES was born early in 1683 in Merionethshire, Wales. She died on 20 September 1772 in Oley, Berks County, Pennsylvania. She was a Friend (Quaker). She immigrated with her father, John Hughes, in 1698 to Gwynedd, Berks County, Pennsylvania. She was was a charter member of Exeter Monthly Meeting in 1737 in Berks County, Pennsylvania.

      Note: 4.25.1737. "Our friend Jane Ellis made application to this meeting for a certificate to travel in truths service in some parts of Maryland, Appeson (?) Potomack and thereaways. This meeting appoints George Boone Sr. (grandfather of Daniel Boone) to assist women friends in driving ... the times not admitting of the staying till next meeting [cont. on notebook p. 13]
     "George Boone, Sr; Anthony Lee, Seismer Wright, Moses Starr, Richard Lundy and Nehemiah Hutton are desired to peruse the same and if they appprove its to be be signed by friends that she be not disappointed"
     "10 29 1737 "Our friend Jane Ellis at her return from visiting friends brought two certificates, one from Tredhavens[?] Yearly in Maryland and the other from Hopewell MM held at Monogusy[?], both giving good account that her visit was well received."
     Jane Ellis was buried "9 20 1772" and her memorial was read "7.1773."

Known children of Thomas¹ Ellis and Jane Hughes all born in Oley, Berks County, Pennsylvania, were as follows:

i. JOHN² ELLIS was born on 18 August 1713.
He was a Friend (Quaker).

2. ii. MORRIS ELLIS, born 12 September 1714; married Sarah Coulson.

iii. ELLIN ELLIS was born on 23 August 1717. She married Thomas Lee. She died on 2 January 1801 at age 83.
She was a Friend (Quaker).

iv. ROWLAND ELLIS was born on 3 January 1718. He married Sarah Stover on 19 May 1742. He died on 30 August 1771 at age 53.
He was a Friend (Quaker).

v. ELLIS ELLIS was born on 14 March 1720. He married Mary Atkinson on 28 April 1746. He died in December 1754 at age 34. His estate was probated on 9 December 1754.
He was a Friend (Quaker).

3. vi. THOMAS ELLIS JR, born December 1721; married Magdalena Carlin.

4. vii. MORDECAI ELLIS, born 23 September 1723; married Mary Hutton.

5. viii. ENOS ELLIS, born 5 August 1725; married Elizabeth Coleston.
