FULTONS REMAINING IN THE AREA IN THE 18^TH CENTURY

In Lisburn the descendants of James Camac Fulton are well recorded by Theodore Hope and I have no reason to cast doubt on what he records, though he was selective and has certainly omitted at least one branch presumably because mother was an Indian lady. He says that James's younger son John born 1730 had three sons and a number of grandchildren but gives no detail other than to say Robert Valpy Fulton of New Zealand had a likely tree for them. This is one possible line from which I descend, as from what grandfather said we must have been fairly close to the Hope line.

Apart from that I have collected a number of so far unlinked references to Fulton, and set them out here for the record.

Derrighy Parish

William Fulton, baptizes son Francis in Jan. 1773, daughter Rebecca on 15 Feb. 1778 and son William on 25 Dec. 1781

The baptismal register also contains intriguing little notes "Mr. Fulton got in all of his oats" dated 10^th Sept. 1768 and 30^th Sept. 1769. I do not know why this should have been recorded at all still less why put it in the register. Maybe he farmed church land perhaps adjacent to his own. My great great grandfather Joseph Fulton is said to have moved from Drumbo to live in Killultagh House on the other side of Lisburn because he did not want to live overlooking the churchyard, and I have found a lease of 1788 where Joseph Fulton transfers land adjoining the Presbyterian Church at Drumbo to Thomas Fulton, (perhaps his brother ) which seems to bear out the story. His family were born between 1790 and 1812 and he died in 1815, so I assume that he moved in 1788 at the time of his marriage. I do not think he can be the Joseph who baptised Rainey in 1764 as at least 47 years between first and last child seems unlikely. Perhaps there were two Josephs father and son - unfortunately the Dumbro records are far from complete.

I have also found traces of Fultons in the Drumbo area in the local newspaper in Belfast showing a Joseph, Thomas and William at various times but I have not yet got enough to sort them out.

There are also two Fulton marriages surviving in the Drumbo records -

Thomas Fulton to Agnes Fulton on 9 July 1782
Thomas Fulton to Susan Carson on 9 February 1786

I assume these are two different Thomases as the lease of 1788 which I mentioned above refers to Thomas Fulton and his wife Agnes.

Aghalee, Moira and adjacent parishes in NW Co. Down and NE Co. Armagh contain families of Fultons who I suspect are the descendants of the William and Thomas who moved to Aghagallon from Derriaghy in the early 18^th century, but that will have to wait until I have completed searching records nearer to Lisburn.

Carmoney and neighborhood

I have not yet been able to establish any connection between this family in the area NE of Belfast and the Lisburn group, although the two are only ten or twelve miles apart, but I have been able to construct extensive family trees from the late 17^th century and up to the time when everything is fully recorded in the civil registers in the mid 19^th century.
