Archibald Stuart Family

Register of Maryland's Heraldic Families  Page 117

The Stewarts, according to tradition were of distinguished ancestry; however, Va. records concerning this family are very incomplete. Three early Stuarts (Stewarts) settled in Augusta Co. before 1745; these were Archibald, David, John. Waddell says they were probably brothers, and judging from the repetition of the given names in each family they were certainly closely related, if not brothers--since no definite proof exists each man (and descendants) is treated separately, in this sketch.

Archibald Stuart (so spelled by Egle & Waddell) was, according to W. H. Eglc ("Notes and Queries of Interior Penn.", Vol. 2, p. (???), one of the carliest settlers in Paxtang Township, Lancaster County, Pa. He was born at Londonderry, Ireland, whither his people had settled on leaving Scotland in the early part of the seventeenth century. He had a brother, Andrew, who is buried in the old Paxtang burying ground. After living in Penn. for a time, he removed with his family to Virginia, and settled "on the South River of the Shanandoe" (will Bk. 9, p. 503--Augusta Co. records); this must have been near Waynesboro, Va.--Waddell says he settled a few miles from Waynesboro or where the town is now. This was between 1738 and 1745. In 1788 he purchased a lot in Staunton. His will was made Sept. 5, 1759--proved Nov. 17, 1761. He m--Janet Brown, sister of Rev.
