"Mary Henthorn, daughter of John Henthorn married David Jennings, son of Benjamin Jennings."  Since we have very little documented information on Benjamin Jennings, his history is included with the Henthorns in the references that include both names. A William Henthorn is found in the Henry County, Iowa 1850 Census, unplaced.  Family records have always stated that the ancestral line begins with Benjamin Jennings, the first from England. This is recorded in the family papers handed down from the grandparents.  This is what was recorded in the journals kept by my mother-in-law and also in that of other family members. My husband's great uncle in his book "My Story"  also noted that there was an old family Bible in which it was recorded that  Benjamin Jennings, the first member of the family, was from England.

Generation No. 1

1. John1 Henthorn1 was born 1710 in Ireland, and died 1766. He married Frances Low 1738, daughter of John Low and Elizabeth Johnson.  They first lived in Chester County, Pennsylvania.  In the History of Chester County, Pennsylvania by Ellis, p. 45-48 is an account of an altercation to wit:

" In the year 1736 there culminated one of those riotous outbreaks caused by the unsettled state of the Maryland bounds. Some Germans having settled ont he west side of the Susquehanna River, several miles north of the temporary line, were at first induced to acknowledge themselves in Maryland, but afterwards, discovering their error, renounced the authority of that province in favor of Pennsylvania. The Deputy Governor of Maryland went among them to urge their adherance to Lord Baltimore, but without avail. The design was then formed of turning them out of their possesions by an armed force of which the command was given to the notorious Thomas Cresap, whose residence was in Pennsylvania. In order to hold the lands so obtained, offers were secretly made to other persons that they might have them on condition of acknowledging the authority of Maryland. About the time of the discovery of this design, the sheriff of Lancaster County was directed to arrest Cresap..it appears that several people in Chester County were concerned with this conspiracy and had been involved in the attempt to evict the people living on the west side of the Susquehanna River, by force, and a long list of people were applying to have these lands once the original settlers were removed.....and listed among those wishing the seized lands were John & James Henthorn."  It is further noted that Sarah Southby was examined upon oath and saith that upon ye 16 day of this Instant..........."saw John Henthorn knock down a man so ye blod run out of his head, and saw James Henthorn and Mary Henthorn strick with stickes." (Above   quoted from Clarice Carnahan book, 1982)

They apparently lived there until 1750 when they moved to Frederick County, Maryland.  Frederick County Hall of Records show several legal documents are found for both John and James.  In 1758, John mortgaged some of his livestock to John McIntyre for "twenty three pounds of Maryland Currentcy".  And in1761, John sold a tract of land (218 acres) to Christian Welldey for "218 pounds of Maryland Currency".   There is a Land Grant Application for "John Henthorn - 300 acres of land on the West side of Wills Creek adj. the provincial Line and Joseph Tomlinson's land inc. his impv't he made in the year of 1761 and where he now lives dated August 19, 1766". History of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania , by George D. Albert, published in 1882 by L.H. Everets & Co. "In 1764, the Indians granted the whites the privilege of erecting forts and trading houses wherever they pleased, in western Pennsylvania, and of traveling the road from sunrising until sunsetting. In 1765, many immigrants from Maryland and Virginia removed over the mountains for the purpose of settling there. They settled mostly in Fayette, part of what was then Cumberland County between the Alleghany Mountains and the Monongahela River, some about the Turkey Foot, some in the river bottoms, with a nucleus at Redstone, but most in the southern part of what is now Westmoreland County...as early as 1766, George Crogan, the Indian agent complained of persons settling at Redstone and at Turkey Foot."
