Lake District

Much to my disgust I cannot find the CD with my photographs of the Lake District, so this page will be a little bit blank for the time being until it turns up.  We went up north for a holiday with Patrick's aunt and uncle and arrived in the middle of a torrential downpour.  We spent a morning exploring Kendal and relaxing in a warm, snug tea shop, then by evening when the weather had cleared, went up into the nearby hills to look down on the city and all the way out to Morecambe Bay.  We saw the ruins of Kendal Castle from a distance throughout our stay, but left a closer inspection for our next visit; however, we did read about its history at the terrific local museum.
Patrick and I took a long hike around Windemere, up to Helm Crag and around the surrounding peaks, then returned through the valley.  Having left fairly early, we had the trails to ourselves but began to see more and more people as the day wore on.  Patrick was more daring and climbed some of the rocks on the peaks, while I amused myself at the base, building miniature inuksuit (plural of inukshuk) for others to find.  Most were fairly successful, others crumbled immediately.  It was a terrific day to be out and about and I can't deny I had a wonderful sleep afterwards, although it was rather difficult to move the next morning.
