The Göbels were cabinet makers by trade and had owned their own business in Germany. In the mid-19th century, curious about business opportunities elsewhere, Johann Henrich, the head of the familym decided to try his luck in America. He and his younger brother travelled via London and the younger brother journeyed alone across the Atlantic, but unfortunately died in the first railroad accident in the United States. The elder brother remained in London, in Islington, and sent for his family in Germany to join him. They lived many years in London, often travelling back to Germany to visit friends and relatives, but in the late 1870s had to return to Germany for health reasons as the head of the family had a weak chest which was exacerbated by the London fogs. At least three of his four children remained in London, but kept close contact with the German family.

Elisabethe GÖBEL was very close to her stepdaughter, Amelia, who believed Elisabethe to be her own mother. Upon Elisabethe's death, Amelia discovered the truth and broke off relations with her family. Her father, Elisabethe's second husband, Emile Louis GAROT, appears to have been a very colourful character from stories recalled by Elisabethe's daughter and granddaughter.

*On 4 June 1905 a domestic servant named Minnie GAROT gave birth to a daughter, Mildred, at 4 King's Road, St Pancras. Minnie GAROT was employed at 9 Bennett Street at the time. Mildred died aged only three months on 26 September 1905 at 31 Eversholt Street, St Pancras, by which time her mother was living at 193 Albany Street, St Pancras. Could Minnie be a nickname for Amelia? No one by this name appears on the 1901 census or in the Birth, Marriage and Death registration index for the time, and I have been unable to locate Amelia on the 1901 census.
