The DENNIS family's origins can be traced to Salem, New Jersey, and may have been descended from the Quaker Joseph DENNIS, from Woodbridge, New Jersey, who had been a pioneer settler in Quakertown, Pennsylvania in the early 1700s. Henry DENNIS owned land and an iron works in Pennsylvania and Delaware, and it was in Solebury Township, Pennsylvania, that he began the boat-building business which his son John would later bring to Canada. They refused initially to take up arms during the American Revolution, due to their Quaker faith, but Henry and his son John eventually would come into the battle on the side of the British and consequently saw their property confiscated. (John later would take up arms against the French at St Lucia.) They fled to New York with the retreating British army and then to Shelburne and Charlotte, New Brunswick, to Beaver Harbour, Nova Scotia, and finally to York (Toronto), where John had been granted 500 acres of land by the British government. In return he built a ship at his yard in Kingston for use during the War of 1812. Their land in Ontario was on the River Humber, near Weston, where they lived at Buttonwood (or Button Wood) Cottage for several generations. John died in York in 1832 during a cholera outbreak, but his family continued to live in the area for years to come.
