African-American Families Named Steadwell, Stedwell or Studwell

whose ancestors lived in Putnam and Westchester Counties, NY and Fairfield County, CT

by Hal Langworthy

Revised January, 2008

The 1790 Federal census shows that several of the Steadwell, Stedwell and Studwell families of New York and Connecticut had slaves, and it seems probable that African-American families having these surnames, who appear in Federal Censuses of New York and Connecticut after 1850, were descendants of these families.

It isn't known if these families were descended from Thomas Studwell or if the families adopted the surnames when freed.

This web site will attempt to develop the history of these families from the available records. If you can provide additional (or better) information, please send it to me - I'd be happy to add it to the site and to list you as a contributor.
