FOLDER ITEM CONTENTS
- - There are several lines of evidence to link John Waugh to Frederick Co, Maryland:
1 - dealings of his Delashmutt inlaws with William Waugh of Frederick Co, MD.
2 - there were good roads between Frederick Co and western PA. In fact, this was a well recognized migration route (see Heisy, John W, "Look to York if your ancestors passed through Pennsylvania", AntiqueWeek [Knightstown, IN] 27 Feb 1989: 3B). "From almost the beginning of the 18th century, newly-arrived immigrants to Pennsylvania had moved west out of Philadelphia in search of land. It ran west from Philadelphia through Lancaster and York, then turned southwest to Frederick, Md., and on into western Virginia. Some of the people who traveled that road stayed in York for a long period of time, others only briefly. Some who passed through going to western Maryland and Virginia came back to visit families or to find brides..York thus became a gateway for the frontier to the west and southwest, and many more people used this same route to travel down to the Carolinas, over to Kentucky. smf eventually up into Ohio" .
3. John Waugh had a slave in Mason Co, KY, in 1791. The only Waughs in the 1790 census of PA with a slave, were from York Co (for the significance of which, see item 2, above).
4. John Waugh had ties to VA, which is just to the west of Frederick Co, MD, such as his daughter Agnes, in a census, saying she was born in VA

0 - Waugh, William (Westmoreland Co, PA) - This is just a guess that this William is f/o John Waugh.

1 - Waugh, John 1783 - Hempfield Twp, Westmoreland Co, PA tax list John Waugh is listed with 60 acres of land, 3 horses, 2 cattle, and 6 sheep.

1 - Waugh, John 1786 - Hempfield Twp, Westmoreland Co, PA tax list John Waugh was charged with an 0.6 £ tax, which looks like a small tax compared with his neighbors on the list.

It is the presence of Hance Ireland that makes me sure that this is the right John Waugh.
