CHURCHES and GRAVEYARDS in Dumfries and Galloway
Explanatory Notes
There are many old churches and graveyards to be found throughout Dumfries and Galloway.
Some old graveyards, like Kirkbride and
Kirkmabreck,  are 'hidden' in the hills and a cross country   hike is required to gain access.
Other locations, like St. Mary's,
St. Michael's
(old and new),
Click to visit Kirkmabreck
Holy Cross,  Dumfries High, Calside and Troqueer are all located within the town boundaries  of Dumfries.
Access to these graveyards is very easy and would fit into one day of walking.  A much better option would be to allow an additional day and include visits to Dumfries churches like St. Michael's and Greyfriar's.
Click to visit St. Michaels I have visited all of the graveyards listed here but had access only to a small number of the churches.
As you will realise,  photographic quality is often affected by the vagaries of
the weather. Some sites require to be re-visited.
Please understand that I make no claims as to the comprehensiveness of this tour.  Photos taken in the graveyards are intended only to be representative of the types of monuments that are to be found there and were not an attempt to record the inscriptions in any systematic way.  You might just be lucky with some of the more easily read MIs.
This tour provides a very general overview.  The limitations of a website mean that only a small sample of all of the available photographs can be shown here.  If you are interested to see more of D&G then read on.

A CD ROM, "An Electronic Tour of Dumfries and Galloway", providing a more extensive photographic record of these graveyards was first published in 1999. This CD, comprising some fifteen-hundred photographs, provides an electronic tour of many of Dumfries and Galloway's Towns and Villages as well as Churches and Graveyards.

A second, then a third version of the CD ROM was produced over the past three years.  These updated versions extend the coverage of all of the current themes.  A newer camera and better software lead to improved image quality and the photo count now exceeds six-thousand photographs.  Indexing and navigation have been greatly improved using frames and menu bars.  Many of the old photographs were replaced.
Copies of the CD are on sale through the Dumfries and Galloway Family History Society.
Since writing the above this CD ROM has gone OUT OF PRINT.  I hope to complete a full revision by late 2007.

Many of the graveyards, like those in Kirkcudbrightshire and Nithsdale, have already had their MIs recorded. Some of these records are available in booklet form and others are available on fiche.
The CDs I have written are not offered as alternatives or replacements for these paper-based records and should be viewed only as additional sources.

The photographic record I have produced clearly shows how many of the graveyard monuments have deteriorated to a state where their inscriptions can no longer be read.  The paper record of these MIs is all that remains to tell the researcher the genealogical story of the monument.
D & G Family History Society welcome enquiries regarding what is published and what is for sale.
